Looking for a day of shopping, exploration, and great food? Downtown Bangor has all of that and more. There is plenty to do whether you’re a thrift shopper, an art enthusiast, a foodie, or just love to explore. With a mix of unique shops, cultural attractions, and delicious eateries, it’s the perfect place to spend a day.

Shopping in Downtown Bangor

Start your day exploring Bangor’s shops, a hub for sustainable shopping. At White Lobster Vintage, you’ll find a treasure trove of ’90s nostalgia, from vintage Disney tees to sports memorabilia. If you’re a sneakerhead, you’ll be impressed by their massive selection of kicks in all styles and sizes. Just a short walk away, Red Rabbit Bazaar offers handmade jewelry, various unique clothing, and home decor. Cool Girl Collective is a must-visit if you love sustainable fashion, with its carefully curated selection of retro styles and statement pieces.

Artistic and Cultural Exploration

After browsing the stores, immerse yourself in Bangor’s art scene. Follow the Interactive Art Map to discover public art throughout the city, including the towering Paul Bunyan Statue and the colorful Umbrella Sky, which is a must-see when the weather gets warmer.

For a deeper dive into fine art, visit the Zillman Art Museum, home to works by legends like Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso—plus, admission is free!  Zillman is part of the Maine Art Museum Trail, which consists of nine museums across the state. They also host events and educational programs year round including art workshops, camps, and artist talks.

Spend some time experiencing local theater at the historic Bangor Opera House, where the Penobscot Theatre Company presents a variety of productions year-round. Founded in 1973, PTC acquired the Bangor Opera House in 1997, growing into Northern Maine’s only year-round professional regional theatre. Built in 1920, the Bangor Opera House is the last remaining of the eight opera houses that once stood in Bangor. Over the years, it has served as a cinema and concert hall before falling into disrepair. PTC restored its original charm and continues to use it as a hub for the arts, enriching the local community through live theater.

Casual Dining

All that exploring will work up an appetite. Bagel Central is a local staple, serving fresh, homemade bagels and baked goods daily. Whether you grab a bagel with their famous honey butter or one of their many deli sandwiches, it’s a great place to relax and recharge. For a late-night adventurous bite, head to Zombie Dogz inside Hollywood Casino. Their creative hotdogs—one even topped with chopped apples—along with pizzas and sandwiches, make for a fun and flavorful meal.

Whether shopping for thrifted gems, exploring Bangor’s thriving art scene, or indulging in delicious food, you will find a perfect spot in Downtown Bangor. Take a day to wander, discover, and enjoy all that this vibrant area has to offer!
