The history of the Katahdin Region predates the state of Maine itself. For centuries, the Penobscot Tribes hunted and fished this land in harmony with the seasons. Colonial settlers arrived in the mid-1700s, establishing frontier outposts along the major rivers. The 19th-century lumber boom transformed the area, as endless forests fueled America’s expansion. Henry David Thoreau’s journeys through the Katahdin Region in 1846, 1853, and 1857 inspired his expeditionary journals, depicting a robust industrial and agrarian economy on the edge of the wilderness.
Today, the Katahdin Region offers fantastic experiences for wildlife and wilderness enthusiasts. At the northern end of the Appalachian Trail stands Katahdin, Maine’s highest peak at 5,267 feet, reigning supreme in Baxter State Park. Spanning over 200,000 acres of mountains, lakes, streams, and forests, the park is a paradise for canoeists, kayakers, and wildlife observers. Keep your eyes peeled for deer, moose, and black bears!
