Located inside of the Katahdin Iron Works Forest is Gulf Hagas, a National Natural Landmark. Part of the Appalachian Trail and the 100 Mile Wilderness, this heavily wooded gorge is more than three miles long and is carved through slate bedrock. Also known as “The Grand Canyon of the Maine,” this canyon goes as deep as 400 feet!
The entire trek itself is an eight mile loop and is an intermediate trail, but it’s not just simply an attractive nature hike – with numerous waterfalls and swimming holes, the trek allows you to connect with nature in a whole new way.
Also inside of the Katahdin Iron Works Forest are the remains of an old charcoal kiln and a blast furnace dating back to the 19th century. Located not too far from Greenville or Dover-Foxcroft, Gulf Hagas makes for an excellent day trip for the experienced hiker, and this is must add to your Maine Highlands vacation itinerary!
