Discover Mt. Kineo State Park: A Historical Gem in Moosehead Lake

Explore the Rich History and Scenic Beauty of Mt. Kineo

Located in the heart of Moosehead Lake, Mt. Kineo State Park is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Rising 800 feet above the deepest portion of Moosehead Lake, Mt. Kineo is a stunning mountain of rhyolite, a rock prized by Native Americans for its flint-like qualities, essential for making tools and arrowheads.

A Glimpse into the Past

The history of Mt. Kineo is as captivating as its landscape. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the base of the mountain was home to the grand Mount Kineo Hotel. This luxurious resort could accommodate up to 1,000 guests and was a popular summer destination for “rusticators”—vacationers from New York and Boston who traveled by train to escape the city heat. The hotel thrived until the 1970s when it closed its doors and was eventually demolished. However, the legacy of this grand era remains alive in the memories of Moosehead residents.

Preserving a Landmark

Recognizing the historical and recreational significance of Mt. Kineo, the Land for Maine’s Future Program purchased a portion of the property in 1990. Today, the Bureau of Parks and Lands manages Mt. Kineo as part of the Moosehead Lake Reserve, ensuring its preservation for public enjoyment.
