The Maine Highlands is home to Katahdin, the final obstacle on the Appalachian Trail. While climbing its 5,000-foot peak is an exhilarating adventure, it is not the only hike worth exploring in the area. The Katahdin region features breathtaking trails and ancient ice caves, providing endless opportunities for outdoor exploration.

Rainbow Loop + Trout Mountain

Two noteworthy hikes in his region are the Rainbow Loop and Trout Mountain trails, which offer moderate difficulty, making them ideal for avid and casual hikers. The Rainbow Loop spans 6 miles and features stunning views of Katahdin, Rainbow Lake, and a portion of the 100-mile wilderness that is part of the Appalachian Trail.

Trout Mountain is nestled between the Debsconeag Lakes and Baxter State Park. At its summit, courageous hikers can choose to climb a steel tower that provides breathtaking views. This tower resembles the former fire lookout that once stood at the top. If you can conquer your fear of heights, the 360-degree views are worth it!

Debsconeag Lakes Wilderness Area: Ice Caves

The Debsconeag Ice Caves are part of the Debsconeag Lakes Wilderness Area. Formed by glaciers thousands of years ago, the Debsconeag Ice Caves are a must-see attraction. Guarded by just a 1-mile, in-and-out hike, these unique caves can contain ice and frost deep into the summer months. This phenomenon creates a natural icebox effect, and visitors often describe the experience as “stepping into another season.”
